About NAPS
What is NAPS?
The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) was launched by the Government of India in August 2016. This initiative aims to enhance skill development and increase employment opportunities by providing financial support to establishments that implement apprenticeship programs, fostering a skilled and employable workforce.
Key Features & Benefits
- Employers can engage apprentices within 2.5% to 15% of total manpower strength (Additional 10% allowed for Maharashtra region)
- The period of apprenticeship training ranges from 6 months to 3 years
- Central Government reimburses 25% of prescribed stipend (limited to ₹1,500 per month) through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
- No labour laws are applicable to apprentices
- Candidates of any education level (Uneducated to Graduate) can be enrolled
Eligibility & Requirements
- Minimum age requirement: 14 years
- Apprenticeship Contract is mandatory and valid for 1 year
- Contract can be extended for additional 2 years (without DBT benefits)
- Apprentices are entitled to leaves and holidays as per company policy
- Workman Compensation (WC) or Group Mediclaim (GMC) policy is mandatory
Implementation Process
- Establishment Registration on government portal (one-time)
- Candidate Registration upon joining (ongoing)
- Contract generation within one month of joining
- Monthly training sessions and record keeping
- Stipend payment through Virtual Account (VAN)
Training Components
Basic Training (BT)
- Weekly two-hour sessions focusing on soft skills
- Online training during off-hours (can be customized)
- Detailed training records and attendance reports provided
On Job Training (OJT)
- Day-to-day instructions by department heads/team leads
- Focuses on core job skills and competencies
- Time-stamped documentation required
Completion Options
Upon successful completion of the 1-year apprenticeship program, companies have three options:
- Absorption into a company role
- Transfer to a contract role
- Relief from the position
Note: Successful apprentices must undergo an assessment by MSDE for certification (fee ranges from ₹800 to ₹1000)
