About NATS

What is NATS?

The National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) is one of the flagship programmes of Government of India for Skilling Indian Youth in Trade disciplines. It offers Graduate, Diploma students and Vocational certificate holders practical, hands-on On-the-Job-Training (OJT) opportunities for up to 1 year under the provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1961 (amended in 1973).

Program Features

  • Employer quota: 2.5% to 15% of total manpower (Additional 10% for Maharashtra)
  • 50% stipend reimbursement through DBT (up to ₹4,500 for degree and ₹4,000 for diploma apprentices)
  • One-year observation period before considering regular employment
  • Optional benefits: PF, ESIC, and Professional Tax
  • Stipend covered under CSR Act (if applicable)

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: 14-35 years
  • Education: Diploma and graduate holders (engineering and non-engineering)
  • Must have completed education within the last 5 years
  • Valid apprenticeship contract required
  • If ESIC exempted, WC/GMC policy is mandatory

Training Structure

Basic Training (BT)

  • Weekly two-hour sessions on soft skills
  • Industry-specific customizable training
  • Online sessions with detailed documentation

On Job Training (OJT)

  • Daily practical training by department heads
  • Focus on core job competencies
  • Documented with time-stamped records

Post-Completion Options

After completing the 1-year program, companies can choose from:

  • Absorption into a company role
  • Extension for 2 more years (without DBT benefits)
  • Transfer to a contract role
  • Relief from the position

Note: Certification requires passing an assessment by the Ministry of Education (fee: ₹1000-₹1500)

Stipend Process

Two Payment Options:

1. Full Stipend Release
  • Full payment upfront by employer
  • Government share received as additional amount
  • Adjustment in next payroll cycle
2. Partial Stipend Release
  • Partial payment minus government share
  • Government portion received within 7-10 days
